Dangote Cement Plc, Ibese Plant, has strengthened its drive for food security and sustainable development by rolling out its 2026 annual farmers’ empowerment programme for 17 host communities in Yewa North, Ogun State.
The initiative, now in its fifth consecutive year, provided 60 selected farmers with modern agricultural inputs and practical training to increase crop yield, raise income, and promote climate-smart farming.
Each beneficiary received three 50kg bags of NPK fertiliser, two bags of urea fertiliser, one knapsack sprayer, and 10 litres of Force-Up herbicide.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Plant Director Ayyagari Subbaraidu said the programme is designed to “build a sustainable agricultural ecosystem” and reduce the cost burden on farmers.
He noted that the intervention aligns with Dangote Cement’s corporate social responsibility pillars of empowerment, education, health, and infrastructure.
“At Dangote Cement, we understand that true development is ultimately about people. It is about creating opportunities, improving livelihoods, and enabling communities to thrive.
“This marks five years of consistent engagement. The initiative has evolved into one of the most impactful interventions under our community development efforts.”
Since its inception, the programme has trained and equipped 300 farmers who have collectively cultivated over 800 acres of farmland and produced more than 40,000 tons of agricultural output across Ibese host communities.
Beyond input distribution, the 2026 edition included capacity-building sessions on good agricultural practices, crop protection, and pest management to help farmers mitigate risks and cut post-harvest losses.
Community leaders and beneficiaries described the support as a “game changer” amid rising input costs and climate challenges.
Mr Akanbi Moses, a farmer from Aga-Olowo Community, said the free inputs and training have “significantly improved productivity and income levels,” enabling scale-up of farming activities.
Representing Yewa North Local Government, Segun Ableto commended Dangote Cement for complementing government efforts to boost food production, calling the initiative “a model of effective public-private partnership.”
Comrade Dayo Ogunyinka, Chairman of the Communities Joint Consultative Committee, added that the programme “has continued to improve the lives of our people” and deepened relations between the company and host communities.
The farmers’ empowerment scheme forms part of Dangote Cement’s Community Development Agreement with its host communities.
The Ibese Plant also runs similar empowerment initiatives for youths, women, and artisans as part of its broader socio-economic development strategy.
