Prince Adewole Adebayo, presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party {SDP}, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s electoral integrity, claiming the president has twisted the historic Option A4 voting system into what he called Option A-Fraud.
Speaking on the state of Nigeria’s democracy, Adebayo warned that the country risks sliding into authoritarian rule under the guise of civilian governance.
He recalled that Option A4, introduced during the Third Republic by then-NEC Chairman Humphrey Nwosu and backed by scholars like Prof. Omo Omoruyi, was designed for transparency: voters queued behind candidates and votes were counted openly at polling units.
“Did anybody believe that President Tinubu can turn Option A4 into Option A-Fraud, where you announce 11 million votes when the people physically present are not even close to that figure?” Adebayo asked.
The SDP flag bearer for the 2027 election alleged that vote figures are being inflated through what he described as elliptical arithmetic.
“You count one, two, three, four and suddenly jump to ninety-nine,” he said.
Adebayo further alleged that the current administration is centralising power and weakening democratic institutions to control the political landscape.
He claimed Tinubu seeks influence across party lines and over the Independent National Electoral Commission {INEC}, dictating candidate emergence.
“This is no longer about party differences or ideology. It is about preventing Nigeria from becoming the personal estate of one man,” he said.
He also accused the government of fuelling internal crises in opposition parties ahead of future elections, citing recent incidents at the SDP national secretariat where he alleged security agencies were used to intimidate members.
Calling on political parties, civil society, the media, and young Nigerians to resist what he termed a prolonged coronation disguised as an election, Adebayo said: “This is the fight of our generation. Once Nigerians defeat this idea of one-man control, nobody will attempt it again.”
The Presidency has not yet responded to Adebayo’s allegations at the time of filing this report.
