Adebayo Slams Tinubu: 'Government Has Become a Tax Collection Agency, Not a Facilitator'

Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of prioritising aggressive tax collection over economic growth and job creation.

Speaking during a televised interview, Adebayo argued that the federal government has shifted focus from productivity to revenue extraction, leaving small businesses and ordinary Nigerians struggling to survive.

“You cannot form a government for the purposes solely of extracting tax from the people. A government is a facilitator. A government is not a pickpocket,” Adebayo said.

The SDP flagbearer clarified that he is not against taxation but insisted that the government must first create an enabling environment for citizens and businesses to thrive.

He said the current approach is stifling entrepreneurship and weakening purchasing power nationwide.

Citing gig workers and small business owners as examples, Adebayo said policy should focus on scaling enterprises into regional brands rather than taxing them into collapse.

“You make sure that this young man who is driving Uber, if I invest a little in him, he can be manufacturing drones for me because he has intellectual capacity.

“If you have a small business, you are not immediately trying to take the money from that business. You think of how it can grow into a franchise across West Africa and become a Nigerian brand,” he stated.

Adebayo also faulted the removal of fuel subsidy, saying it has deepened hardship instead of curbing corruption as promised.

“I said President Tinubu’s policies would ruin the economy and ruin purchasing power for the people,” he noted.

He argued that rising living costs have made it nearly impossible for Nigerians to earn an honest living, regardless of salary levels.

“No matter how much your organisation pays you in Nigeria, you cannot earn an honest living,” he said.

The SDP candidate said his party would prioritise productivity, industrial growth, small business support, and full implementation of constitutional provisions to improve citizens’ welfare.
