Ridesmash Bets on Electric Vehicles, Driver Ownership to Disrupt Abuja’s Mobility Market

ABUJA, Nigeria — Homegrown mobility startup Ridesmash is set to roll out an electric-vehicle (EV) ride-hailing app in Abuja, pairing the launch with a driver empowerment program that offers access to EVs under a flexible 24-month repayment plan

The company says the model is designed to cut entry barriers, slash operating costs, and steer Nigeria’s capital toward cleaner, more profitable urban transport.

The Abuja debut aligns with Ridesmash’s broader plan to launch nationwide on May 1, 2026, with Nigeria serving as the first market before a phased expansion to more than 40 countries.

A shift to electric, driver-first economics

Ridesmash is pitching the EV switch as a win for both sustainability and driver take-home pay.

Key benefits highlighted by the company include:
Reduced fuel dependency and lower running costs versus petrol cars, a structured 24-month EV repayment pathway aimed at ownership and long-term financial stability,
a competitive commission structure and flexible working hours, and a driver-first earning model that prioritises welfare and retention.

App features for riders and drivers

According to co-founder and CEO Eigbefoh Paul Smith, the platform was built for the Nigerian reality, focusing on reliability, safety, and long-term sustainability rather than tech for tech’s sake.

Core features include:
User-friendly booking interface and efficient driver allocation,
Real-time trip tracking and enhanced in-app safety tools, affordable pricing for riders with transparent fare algorithms, and In-app support and direct driver–rider communication channels

Why Abuja first

Ridesmash says Abuja’s growing urban population, strong demand for dependable transport, and rising awareness of sustainable mobility make it a strategic launch city.

The company plans to use the capital as a springboard for wider Nigerian coverage and, eventually, international markets.

Call to drivers

The company is inviting Abuja drivers, both new entrants and existing operators, to join the rollout, access EVs through the 24-month repayment plan, and operate with lower daily running costs.

“The future of mobility in Africa is electric, efficient, and inclusive, and Ridesmash is leading that transformation,” Smith said.
