GENEVA – As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine looms, negotiators from Moscow and Kyiv have arrived in Switzerland for a pivotal, closed-door round of peace talks.
The summit, beginning Tuesday, arrives amid a sharp escalation in diplomatic pressure from U.S. President, Donald Trump, who has demanded an immediate end to Europe’s largest conflict since 1945.
On board Air Force One late Monday, President Trump signalled a shift in American urgency.
Characterising the negotiations as big, the President issued a blunt ultimatum, stating that, “Ukraine better come to the table, fast.”
While the White House remains tight-lipped on the specifics of the U.S. peace plan, the administration is heavily represented in Geneva by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Despite the renewed diplomatic push, the fundamental hurdles remain unchanged. The Kremlin is insisting Kyiv cede the remaining 20% of the Donetsk region currently under Ukrainian control.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pushed back against concessions, stating that Ukraine is facing immense pressure to trade land for peace.
Russia currently occupies approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and parts of the Donbas.
“Only with sufficient pressure on Russia and clear security guarantees for Ukraine can this war realistically be brought to an end,” Zelenskyy posted on social media Monday, accusing Moscow of continuing strikes even as its diplomats sit down to talk.
