Trump Announces Capture of Maduro Following Escalating US Military Action in Venezuela

United States President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that US forces had captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro following what he described as a large-scale strike on the South American nation, marking a dramatic escalation in Washington’s long-running standoff with Caracas.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Maduro and his wife had been apprehended and flown out of Venezuela after the operation, which he described as a coordinated effort involving American military assets and law enforcement agencies.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump wrote.

He added that the operation was conducted “with U.S. law enforcement.”

Trump also announced plans to address the development at a news conference scheduled for 11:00 am local time at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where he has been spending the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

The announcement comes after months of intensified military and economic pressure by the United States on the Maduro government, which has been grappling with a deep economic crisis linked largely to Venezuela’s dependence on oil exports

Trump had repeatedly criticised Maduro, previously suggesting that it would be “smart” for the Venezuelan leader to step aside and warning that his “days are numbered.”
