Assault: NWFL Slams Ibom Angels with Heavy Fines, Stadium Ban - The News Accelerator Network

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has moved decisively to penalise Ibom Angels FC following alleged violent crowd disturbances and physical assault on Bayelsa Queens players and officials.

The incident occurred during their Premiership clash on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the Uyo Township Stadium in Akwa Ibom State.

Following an urgent review of match reports and video evidence, the league management announced a series of stringent disciplinary measures on Thursday to address the breach of conduct.

The findings revealed that Ibom Angels supporters encroached onto the pitch, attacking the visiting team in a move the NWFL described as a serious violation of regulatory frameworks and fair play.

The NWFL imposed a total fine of ₦2.5 million on Ibom Angels. This figure includes: ₦1.5 million for violating Article 26.1, specifically relating to assault, intimidation, and offensive conduct; ₦1 million for failing to provide adequate security and bringing the game into disrepute.

Beyond the financial hit, the club has been ordered to play their next three home matches behind closed doors.

This means no spectators will be allowed for their upcoming fixtures against Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens, and Naija Ratels throughout January and February.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, emphasised that these sanctions are a necessary deterrent.

"The safety of players, officials, and match personnel is non-negotiable," Shabi stated.

She further warned that any repeat of such violence could lead to even harsher penalties, including extended venue bans or further disciplinary actions.
