The News Accelerator Network—Rivers Assembly Initiates Impeachment Against Governor Fubara, Deputy

The Rivers State political crisis reached a boiling point on Thursday as the House of Assembly officially commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu

The lawmakers specifically leveled grave allegations of gross misconduct against the state's top two executives.

During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the House Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a formal notice of allegations.

Invoking Section 188 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, Jack outlined a seven-point indictment against Governor Fubara.

The charges include the controversial demolition of the Assembly Complex, unauthorised extra-budgetary spending, and a deliberate refusal to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on the financial autonomy of the legislature.

The notice, signed by 26 members of the House, also accused the Governor of withholding vital funds intended for the Assembly Service Commission.

Amaewhule confirmed that the executive will be officially served with the notice within seven days.

Simultaneously, Deputy Leader Linda Stewart presented a separate notice of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

The allegations against Odu include the reckless spending of public funds and obstructing the House from performing its constitutional duties.

Furthermore, she is accused of conniving to allow unscreened individuals to occupy public offices and bypassing the legitimate Assembly to seek budgetary approvals from an unauthorised group.
