There was once a young man who was going through serious financial difficulties. In search of divine intervention, he visited a prophet who assured him that God was working on his situation and that, in a short while, things would improve.
Filled with joy, the young man left the prophet’s place feeling fulfilled. He imagined the kind of cars he would drive when his miracle arrived and recalled the embarrassment his mother-in-law had caused him a few days earlier, promising himself that he would one day “show her pepper” when his breakthrough finally came.
However, two months later, he was still begging friends for data and food money.
Frustrated, he began calling out the prophet on social media, accusing him of being a fake man of God because the prophecy had not come to pass.
To cut a long story short, three years later, the young man landed a contract worth millions of dollars.
His miracle had come. At that moment, he remembered the prophet’s words, regretted his earlier outbursts, and asked God for forgiveness.
This story best explains the situation surrounding the prophetic warning shared by Primate Ayodele on Saturday concerning Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, his performance in Nigeria’s opening AFCON match against Tanzania yesterday, and the rush by many to judge the prophet’s words.
On Saturday, while speaking about the tournament, Primate Ayodele stated that some players should not be overly relied upon and mentioned Ademola Lookman among them.
He also advised that an alternative be found for Nwabali and cautioned that Victor Osimhen should not be allowed to play full-time.
According to him, Nigeria would not be eliminated early if these instructions were heeded.
These were his words: “The coach doesn’t have luck, and that will affect us. Meanwhile, we are not going to be eliminated early if they put the right people there.
“Ademola Lookman will not help them; they need an alternative to Nwabali. We can get to the final.”
Nigeria went on to defeat Tanzania 2–1, and to be fair, Ademola Lookman put in a strong performance and even scored one of the goals for the Super Eagles.
But is that enough to judge the prophecy of Primate Ayodele? Absolutely not.
The Super Eagles have only played one match in the tournament. There are still group-stage games, followed by the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
It is a long journey, and judging a prophecy based on a single match is premature and misleading.
Since yesterday, there has been an avalanche of reactions to Primate Ayodele’s comments about Lookman.
Many of these reactions have grossly misinterpreted his statement, with some, out of sheer ignorance, branding the cleric a fake simply because Lookman scored a goal.
One must ask: how does scoring a goal in one match automatically guarantee the AFCON trophy for Nigeria? Even if the Super Eagles had lost yesterday, it would not have ruled them out of qualification.
So how exactly has the prophecy been defeated?
Primate Ayodele was not speaking about one game; he was referring to the entire tournament.
How, then, can he be declared fake when only one match has been played?
One also wonders: what if Lookman struggles in subsequent matches or fails to deliver in crucial moments? Would these same critics still be so vocal?
Ironically, they would likely be the first to criticise the player, just as they rushed to attack the prophet. Would they not then be filled with regret, much like the young man in the earlier story?
Humans can be extremely impatient, and this impatience often robs us of meaningful outcomes, fuelled by premature celebration and the inability to wait for the full picture to unfold.
