Beyond Mining: Dangote Granite Mines Sustains Educational Support for Ijebu-Igbo Youth

In a robust demonstration of its commitment to community development and youth empowerment, Dangote Granite Mines, a subsidiary of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has presented bursary awards to 60 qualified students from its host communities in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State.

The initiative, which reinforces the Dangote Group’s dedication to fostering academic excellence, was celebrated at a gathering that brought together community leaders, excited student beneficiaries, supportive parents, and the Management of Dangote Granite Mines.

The awards were distributed to students from the four major host communities: Ayebandele, Olorunmodu, Saliu Babarisi, and Idi Omo, reflecting the company's focus on inclusive growth and upliftment.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Joseph Alabi, General Manager of Community Relations at Dangote Granite Mines, reaffirmed the organisation’s long-standing dedication to social responsibility.

Mr Alabi disclosed that the bursary beneficiaries include 40 students currently enrolled in tertiary institutions and 20 secondary school students, signalling a strong commitment to supporting both higher education and foundational learning within the area.

He further elaborated that the bursary scheme is one component of a broader portfolio of interventions implemented across Ijebu-Igbo.

“This extensive range of social projects has included the renovation of classrooms, the development of health centres, the installation of solar-powered boreholes, and significant social investments aimed at sustaining the local cultural heritage,” he stated.

Mr Alabi who emphasised a unique feature of the programme designed to maximise its impact, posited that, "The uniqueness of our bursary is such that it doesn’t stop as a one-off gesture; we continue to support the students throughout their study period.

“This structure ensures continuity and allows students to focus solely on academic improvement without perennial financial worries.

“The sustained support is a strategic effort to ease the financial burdens faced by local families and guarantee seamless educational progress.”

The company’s consistent efforts earned high praise from community leaders. High Chief Ademola Ariyo, who represented the paramount ruler, the Sopinlukale of Oke—Sopin, Ijebu-Igbo, Oba Mufutau Adesesan Yusuf, lauded the Dangote Group for its unwavering dedication.

“When you invest in the education of our children, you invest in the future of Ijebu Igbo,” High Chief Ariyo stated.

He described the educational initiative as a tangible testament to a company that genuinely values the people among whom it operates, noting the palpable impact of the Company’s various ongoing community development projects in infrastructure and social welfare evident across the area.

The positive effect of the bursary was immediately apparent among the recipients.

Zainab Ontilo, a tertiary institute awardee, expressed deep gratitude, stating, “This money would go a long way in ensuring I complete my tertiary education seamlessly.”

Similarly, Enitan Haruna, an ecstatic recipient, noted the significance of the timely intervention, adding that, "I can finally concentrate fully on my education without having to worry about how my next tuition would be paid or how I will afford miscellaneous expenses.”

The successful ceremony culminated with the formal presentation of cheques to all beneficiaries, marking a hopeful step forward for youth development in the Ijebu-Igbo host communities.
