2027: Backers Urge Adewole Adebayo to Recontest as Nigeria Seeks Rescue

Calls are growing within political circles for Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, to recontest Nigeria’s top office in the 2027 polls amid mounting economic and security challenges facing the country.

Adebayo, an Ondo State–born lawyer, businessman and public affairs commentator, has continued to attract attention as a potential contender, with supporters citing his political consistency, private-sector experience and commitment to national reform as key strengths.

He contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the SDP and has remained loyal to the party despite reported overtures from other political parties since the polls.

One of his prominent supporters, Nalado Usman Yusuf, a politician and businessman based in Daura, Katsina State, said Adebayo’s background and experience make him well-suited to offer Nigerians an alternative leadership option in 2027.

According to Yusuf, Adebayo’s refusal to defect underscores his image as a principled politician rather than a roving aspirant in constant search of an electoral ticket.

Yusuf argued that Adebayo’s personal wealth and consistent political ideology suggest he is motivated more by a desire to reform the country than by personal enrichment.

He noted that during the 2023 campaign, Adebayo ran under the slogan ‘Hope Again 2023,’ which supporters now believe could be reframed in 2027 around a broader national rescue agenda.

Security remains a central focus of Adebayo’s supporters, particularly insecurity in northern Nigeria, which Yusuf said has disrupted economic activities and social life.

He called for decisive action, including improved deployment of security forces and increased use of modern surveillance and intelligence-gathering technologies.

Education, agriculture and social welfare were also identified as sectors requiring urgent intervention.

On industrialisation, Yusuf advocated the revival of moribund industries, encouragement of new manufacturing ventures and incentives for investors to stimulate economic growth and job creation.

He further stressed the need to revitalise the civil service through timely payment of salaries and pensions, settlement of debts owed to contractors and greater transparency in governance.

Drawing historical parallels, Yusuf recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari contested multiple times before eventually winning the presidency in 2015, arguing that persistence remains a viable path in Nigerian politics.
