Eminent Nigerian legal scholar, Professor Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN), will lead a distinguished panel of experts on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, to deliberate on Nigeria’s deepening security and human rights challenges amid fresh allegations by the United States of religious genocide against Christians in the country.
The forum, which is part of the Annual Lecture and Awards of Gavel International, is themed ‘The Impact of National Security Policies on Vulnerable Populations: A Human Rights Perspective.’
It will take place at the OPTS Hall of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Founded by veteran journalist Mustapha Ogunsakin, Gavel International has earned a reputation as a thought leadership platform for promoting the rule of law, justice, and human rights in Nigeria.
This year’s event is expected to attract leading legal minds, media professionals, policymakers, and security experts for a robust dialogue on the nation’s worsening insecurity.
The lecture will be chaired by the doyen of the Nigerian Bar, Chief Professor Wole Olanipekun (SAN). Other distinguished discussants include the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso; Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo (SAN); Major General James Ataguba (rtd); AIG Tunde Ogunsakin (rtd); and Dr Olukayode Oyeleye, an agricultural policy analyst who will explore the nexus between food security and national stability.
As part of the ceremony, Gavel International will confer Lifetime Achievement Awards on eminent Nigerians who have made significant contributions to law, media, and national development.
The honourees include former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Dr Attia Nasreddin, Mr Gbenga Oyebode, Dr Oludare Bello, Mr Richard Akinnola, and Mr Lere Fashola.
Speaking ahead of the event, Ogunsakin emphasised that the annual lecture seeks to inspire public engagement and propose sustainable solutions to the country’s growing insecurity.
“The constitutional mandate for safety and security is paramount and non-negotiable. Every Nigerian deserves to live without fear, from kidnappings to forced displacement and politically motivated violence. This lecture aims to chart a pathway to peace and justice,” he said.
Since its debut in 2015, Gavel International’s Annual Lecture Series has evolved into a key platform for national reflection on justice and governance.
Notable past editions have featured Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), Femi Falana (SAN), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, and Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), among others.
This year’s edition, coming at a time of national anxiety over security and governance, promises to deepen the discourse on how Nigeria can balance state power with human rights protection while safeguarding its unity and stability.
