Negligence, Not Foul Play, Caused Mohbad’s Death – Coroner

The Coroner’s Inquest into the controversial death of 26-year-old Afrobeats singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has recommended the prosecution of auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, for medical negligence.

Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, who delivered the long-awaited verdict on Friday at the Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, stated that while the exact medical cause of death could not be certified due to the body’s decomposition, evidence pointed to a fatal reaction from an injection administered by the nurse.

“I cannot certify a true cause of death, but I draw a link from the sudden reaction of the deceased after being injected by the nurse.

“The death is not linked to any evidence of foul play, but medical negligence,” Magistrate Shotobi declared.

According to the findings, Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, two days after sustaining a hand injury.

Witnesses reported that he suffered convulsions shortly after receiving an injection at his Lekki home.

The inquest, which heard from 19 witnesses, including two pathologists, noted that the state of the body compromised the autopsy.

However, expert testimony strongly suggested the injection played a role in the singer’s untimely death.

The Coroner dismissed public speculation tying Mohbad’s death to his former record label boss, Azeez Fashola (Naira Marley), and associate, Sam Larry, stating that no evidence directly linked them to the incident.

Magistrate Shotobi also criticised Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, for hastily burying his son without adhering to medical or legal protocols, despite receiving financial support from singer Davido.

She faulted the late singer’s wife for not seeking proper medical help or stopping the father’s actions.

Shotobi further recommended a dignified reburial, better regulation of injection administration, stronger anti-bullying policies in the music industry, improved emergency care, and mandatory investigations of sudden youth deaths.
