His Principal Private Secretary, Mustapha Abdullahi Junaid, also confirmed the death in a statement issued Saturday morning.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings,” he said.
Alhaji Dantata was a founding pillar of modern Nigerian commerce. He established Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd. and was instrumental in founding Jaiz Bank, Nigeria’s first Islamic bank. He was also the uncle of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
