A socio-cultural organisation of Lagos indigenes, De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, has filed a lawsuit against the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) over its plan to conduct local government elections in 57 council areas across the state.
The Foundation, in the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, is challenging LASIEC’s move to organise elections in both the 20 constitutionally recognised Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the additional 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) established by the Lagos State Government.
In the originating summons marked FHC/L/CS/1012/2025, the group described the electoral plan as “unconstitutional, illegal and a violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
The plaintiffs argue that only the 20 LGAs listed in Part I of the First Schedule to the Constitution are legally recognised for the conduct of local government elections.
The group is seeking, among other reliefs: “A declaration that LASIEC lacks the authority to conduct elections in the 37 LCDAs;
“A perpetual injunction restraining the commission from organising or announcing elections in any council beyond the 20 LGAs;
“An order directing LASIEC to limit its electoral activities to the constitutionally sanctioned LGAs.”
