Iran has executed a man convicted of spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate into the eleventh day of hostilities.
The judiciary announced on Monday that Mohammad-Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh was hanged after being found guilty of “intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime,” a term Iran uses to refer to Israel.
Shayesteh was accused of maintaining covert ties with Mossad and collaborating with Iran International, a London-based Persian-language media outlet critical of the Iranian government.
Iranian authorities have branded the broadcaster a “terrorist organisation” and claim it has links to Israel, particularly following the 2022 nationwide protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who died in police custody for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code.
Iran’s judiciary has stepped up its crackdown on suspected foreign operatives. Just a day earlier, authorities announced the execution of another alleged Mossad agent, Majid Mosayebi.
Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei warned that cases involving “support for the usurping regime (Israel)” and those acting as internal threats would now be “handled more swiftly.”
Iran has a long-standing practice of publicising arrests and executions tied to espionage, particularly involving Israel.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have repeatedly condemned Iran's use of the death penalty.
The Islamic Republic remains the world's second-highest executioner after China.
