In a landmark ruling aimed at curbing corruption in Nigeria’s oil industry, the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has sentenced two oil marketers, Mamman Nasir Ali and Christian Taylor, to 14 years in prison each for a ₦2.2 billion fuel subsidy fraud.
Justice Mojisola Dada handed down the sentence on Monday after the duo, along with their company, Nasaman Oil Services Limited, were found guilty on a 57-count amended charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges included conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, forgery, and using false documents. The EFCC told the court the fraudulent act occurred on or about September 9, 2011, when the defendants submitted forged documents, including a fake gasoline analysis report, to claim subsidy payments.
The judge ruled that the evidence presented by the prosecution was overwhelming and that the fraudulent activities undermined the integrity of the petroleum subsidy programme.
Justice Dada also ordered the forfeiture of assets and bank accounts connected to the scam. Meanwhile, arrest warrants have been issued for Oluwaseun Ogunbambo and Olabisi Abdul Afeez, who are still at large.
