Nnamdi Kanu Apologizes for Attacks on Court, Lawyers as Trial Resumes

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has publicly apologized for his recent verbal attacks on the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, and members of his legal team.

Kanu, who is currently facing trial on terrorism-related charges, tendered his apology on Friday through his new counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

The apology was also directed at the Federal Government’s lawyer, Chief Awomolo (SAN).

The IPOB leader had previously criticised Justice Nyako and his former legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, but sought to make amends as his case resumed under a new judge, Justice James Omotosho.

During the court session, Agabi requested permission to deliver a message on Kanu’s behalf, stating that he had already discussed the matter with the prosecution’s lawyer.

Justice Omotosho granted the request, allowing Agabi to convey Kanu’s regret over his past remarks.

The case had been reassigned to Justice Omotosho following Justice Nyako’s withdrawal in September 2024, after Kanu and his legal team accused her of bias.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, had initially returned the case to Justice Nyako, insisting that a formal application was required for her recusal.

However, Kanu and Ejimakor maintained that she no longer had jurisdiction, leading to the indefinite suspension of proceedings.

With the reassignment to Justice Omotosho, the trial is set to begin afresh (de novo), with Kanu expected to take his plea.

The judge has scheduled the next court session for March 21 to commence proceedings.

Kanu, who was extradited from Kenya in June 2021, has faced multiple legal battles, with his trial passing through several judges, including Justice Ahmed Mohammed and Justice Tsoho before it was assigned to Justice Nyako.

His legal team has frequently challenged the handling of the case, leading to multiple delays and reassessments.
