In a remarkable display of philanthropy, the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has intensified its humanitarian efforts by distributing over one million bags of rice, worth an estimated ₦16 billion, across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
The latest beneficiaries of this large-scale food intervention include Katsina and Kwara states, where thousands of vulnerable individuals have received much-needed relief during the holy month of Ramadan and Lent.
On Tuesday, at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina, the ADF formally launched its rice distribution program for the state.
Mustapha Umar, a representative of the Foundation, announced that 35,000 bags of rice had been earmarked for Katsina’s poor and vulnerable populations, with beneficiaries carefully selected from all 361 wards across the state’s 34 local government areas.
“This year’s initiative targets over one million Nigerians, to ease their economic hardships,” Umar stated.
“During this sacred period of Ramadan, the Foundation is committed to complementing government efforts to improve the well-being of the people,” he added.
Each political ward in Katsina is expected to receive 94 beneficiaries, ensuring an equitable distribution process.
The initiative was warmly received by the state government, with Hisbah Board Commander, Dr Aminu Usman, expressing deep appreciation for the intervention.
"This generous support will go a long way in reducing the difficulties faced by the poor.
“The Katsina State Government is also actively providing free Ramadan feeding programs, and we encourage other wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to follow the Dangote Foundation’s example in assisting the less privileged, particularly during this holy month,” Usman remarked.
The distribution exercise, which saw physically challenged individuals and other vulnerable groups receiving 10 kg bags of rice, was supervised by officials from the Katsina State Community Development Program, Hisbah Board members, and other stakeholders.
Following the Katsina distribution, the ADF extended its food relief program to Kwara State, where 25,000 bags of rice were delivered to support underprivileged families across the state’s 16 local government areas.
The Kwara State government, represented by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, officially received the donation at the Ministry of Agriculture in Ilorin.
Alabi commended Aliko Dangote’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes, describing the donation as an act of compassion that would provide much-needed relief to fasting Muslims and Christians observing Lent.
"This intervention is a powerful testament to the importance of corporate social responsibility and the role philanthropists play in tackling poverty.
“We remain deeply grateful to the Aliko Dangote Foundation for its continued support of indigent people across Nigeria,” Alabi noted.
Malam Ahmed Gobir, Group General Manager of Human Resources at Dangote Cement PLC, represented the Foundation at the event.
He reiterated ADF’s commitment to working alongside state governments to address food insecurity and economic challenges.
"This is the second consecutive year that the Foundation has donated one million bags of 10 kg rice across Nigeria.
“The initiative is not just about charity but about fostering food security, nutrition, health, education, and empowerment,” Gobir stated.
