WAFASC 2025: Stakeholders Urge Students to Prioritize Academics for a Brighter Future

Education stakeholders have called on students to remain dedicated to their studies, emphasizing that academic excellence is key to building a solid foundation for their future.

This charge was given at the 11th edition of the Winifred Awosika Foundation Annual Schools' Challenge (WAFASC), held at Chrisland Pre-Degree College, Lekki, Lagos.

The event, themed “Promoting Academic Excellence,” brought together educators, students, and professionals to highlight the significance of quality education and intellectual growth.

JAMB Representative Encourages Students

The Zonal Director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Lagos, Mr Shittu Billiaminu, represented by Mrs Grace Ojekwe, advised students to prioritize their academics.

“I know we are in the jet age, but please take your studies seriously.

“There is time to study, and there is time to make money. The only thing you owe your parents right now is to focus on your education and excel in your exams,” Ojekwe urged.

She also reminded prospective JAMB candidates to ensure that their names, state of birth, and National Identification Number (NIN) match across all official records, including West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) documents.

Additionally, she reiterated that no candidate below 16 years of age would be eligible to register for the upcoming JAMB examination, which consists of 180 computer-based questions.

Promoting Excellence Through Competition

Mr Segun Ogunsola, the Executive Head of Academics at WAFASC, emphasized that the foundation was established to promote academic excellence and healthy competition among schools.

“Chrisland School, founded by Chief Mrs Winifred Awosika on October 3, 1977, is now 47 years old.

“The Winifred Awosika Foundation Annual Schools' Challenge (WAFASC) started in 2014 to encourage healthy academic rivalry and excellence among students,” he stated.

Ogunsola encouraged students to seize the opportunity to network, build friendships, and expand their knowledge beyond the classroom.

Sponsors Inspire Students to Think Beyond Limits

A key sponsor of the event, Engr. Olumide Jayeola, CEO of LASACO Properties Ltd, urged students to remain dedicated to their studies while thinking creatively.

“You can become whatever you wish if you are determined. Hard work and perseverance will lead you to greatness,” he said, commending Chrisland School for providing students with a platform to showcase their academic abilities.

Another sponsor, Chrisland Pre-Degree College, Lekki, represented by Dr Atinuke Agomoh, emphasized that competitions like WAFASC play a crucial role in enhancing students' confidence and preparing them for future academic challenges.

Top Schools Emerge, Winners

The 2025 WAFASC saw seventeen schools compete in a rigorous academic contest, demonstrating their intellectual prowess.

At the end of the keenly contested challenge, the winners were:

1st Place: Christ the King International School, Gbagada, Lagos

2nd Place: Lagoon School, Lekki

3rd Place: Caleb British International School, Lekki

The event concluded on a celebratory note, with students, teachers, and sponsors commending the competition for fostering academic excellence and healthy rivalry.
