The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated investigations into tragic stampedes at food distribution events in Abuja and Anambra State, which claimed multiple lives.
At least ten people lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries during a food distribution exercise at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.
Similarly, three individuals were confirmed dead, and several others injured, at a philanthropic event in Okija, Anambra State.
Describing the negligence leading to the incidents as criminal, IGP Egbetokun ordered state police commissioners to conduct thorough investigations to determine culpability.
“The IGP has ordered the Commissioners of the affected states to carry out thorough investigations into these ugly incidences for further legal actions,” said Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.
The police assured the public of accountability and measures to prevent similar tragedies in future humanitarian efforts.
