In a dramatic turn of events, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, has conceded defeat in the parliamentary election even as official results are yet to be announced.
Jugnauth’s concession marks the end of his tenure, which began in 2017, and signals a major political shift in the Indian Ocean nation.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Jugnauth said: “L’Alliance Lepep is heading towards a huge defeat.
“I have tried to do what I can for the country and the population.
“The population has decided to choose another team. I wish good luck to the country.”
The election, held on Sunday, saw voters choosing legislators for the 62 parliamentary seats from a crowded field of 68 parties and five political alliances.
The coalition or party securing more than half the seats will also claim the prime minister's post.
This outcome fulfils a prophecy made by Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, just a week before the election.
In his statement, Primate Ayodele predicted the incumbent’s downfall, highlighting the unpopularity of his policies and the likelihood of a coalition unseating him.
“If there is a coalition, the ruling party will not get enough votes and the prime minister will have issues.
“The people don’t want the prime minister again, they don’t like his policies, and except he rigs, with the way things are, the prime minister is almost out if there is a coalition,” the cleric stated.
True to the prophecy, opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam is set to reclaim the prime ministership for the third time.
Ramgoolam’s success was powered by the Alliance of Change, a coalition of four political parties that united to topple Jugnauth's government.
The election results underscore the discontent among the Mauritian population with Jugnauth's administration and the appeal of the opposition's promises of change.
Analysts suggest that the Alliance of Change coalition was instrumental in swaying voter sentiment against the ruling party.
Primate Ayodele’s prophecy adds another layer of intrigue to this political shake-up, with his words seen by many as a testament to his spiritual insight.
A video of the prophecy, shared on social media, has since gone viral, drawing attention to his track record of accurate predictions.
As Mauritius enters a new political chapter, the focus now shifts to the promises of the incoming government under Navin Ramgoolam, who faces the challenge of steering the nation toward progress while addressing the grievances of its citizens.
