Okpebholo's Inauguration As Edo Governor: Obaseki Allegedly Flees Nigeria

In an unprecedented development in Edo State politics, Governor Godwin Obaseki has allegedly fled Nigeria just 48 hours before the inauguration of Governor-elect Senator Monday Okpebholo.

The claim was made in a statement released on Sunday by Godspower Inegbe, a spokesperson for Okpebholo, who raised concerns about Obaseki's abrupt departure and unusual behaviour leading up to the transition of power.

According to the statement, Governor Obaseki ordered a complete evacuation of personnel from the Edo State Government House on Friday before reportedly leaving Benin City in disguise.

The statement speculates that Obaseki may be attempting to cross Nigeria’s borders by land, which has sparked further questions about his intentions.

The statement released on behalf of Okpebholo read, “Governor Obaseki has been absent from the state since Friday, abandoning governance and evading public engagement just days before the end of his tenure.

“He did not use the airport, which would have drawn public attention; instead, he disguised himself and took a bus out of Benin City. This raises serious concerns about his intentions.”

The governor-elect accused Obaseki of spreading misinformation to divert attention from what he described as “sinister plans” to leave the country ahead of his exit from office.

“Okpebholo urged the public to remain vigilant during this period and assured Edo State citizens that these manoeuvres would not affect the political transition.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Obaseki claimed on Saturday that he was not invited to Okpebholo’s inauguration ceremony, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

This latest statement follows his recent allegation that his mandate was unjustly taken from him, escalating the tension and drama surrounding Edo State's handover of power.

With the inauguration just days away, Edo residents and political observers are closely watching the unfolding events, speculating on Obaseki’s motives and the implications for the state’s upcoming leadership transition.
