Netanyahu Dismisses Defence Minister Gallant Amid 'Crisis of Trust,' Sparking Protests

Yoav Gallant

In a surprising move amid ongoing conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a “crisis of trust” between them.

Netanyahu announced the decision on Tuesday, stating that Foreign Minister Israel Katz would take over Gallant's position.

“Amid a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and the minister of defence.

“Unfortunately, although in the first months of the campaign there was such trust and there was very fruitful work, during the last months this trust cracked between me and the minister of defence,” Netanyahu said.

Gallant, however, remained resolute in his commitment to national security, sharing on social media that “the security of the state of Israel was and will always remain the mission of my life.”

This latest dismissal has ignited a wave of protests in Tel Aviv, with opposition leaders calling for broader public demonstrations.

The dismissal follows a history of friction between Netanyahu and Gallant, whose relationship has been strained for years.

Earlier in March, before the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, Netanyahu had previously fired Gallant over political disagreements, only to reinstate him after a significant public backlash.

Gallant has been a prominent figure in Israel’s military operations against Hamas since hostilities began in October 2023.

His removal from the role of Defence Minister comes at a critical juncture in the ongoing campaign, marking a significant shift within Israel's defence leadership as the conflict continues.
