Veteran actor Charles Olumo, affectionately known as “Agbako,” recently passed away at a very old age.
Despite his long life, Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, expressed sorrow over the loss of the iconic actor who graced Nigerian screens for decades.
Primate Ayodele has long been an advocate for Nollywood, consistently showing his support for its practitioners.
He regularly invites actors to church events, offers financial assistance, and prays for their well-being.
Due to his deep respect for the industry, he took an extra step to provide financial support to Charles Olumo in his later years.
Starting in July 2023, Ayodele placed Olumo on a lifetime stipend of N100,000 per month.
This announcement was made during an event hosted by the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) in Abeokuta to celebrate Olumo’s 100th birthday.
During the celebration, Primate Ayodele was named a life patron of the association.
At the same event, he presented Olumo with a cheque for N500,000 and pledged the monthly salary until Olumo's passing.
In his speech, Primate Ayodele encouraged TAMPAN to establish a foundation to support ageing veterans in Nollywood, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their dignity.
“I appreciate this group for recognizing me and the work we do.
“By God’s grace, I will donate N500,000 to veteran actor Charles Olumo and provide him with a monthly stipend of N100,000 until his maker calls him home.
“Additionally, I want a foundation for old veterans where we can assist them financially. They shouldn't become beggars to survive," the cleric stated.
Primate Ayodele’s dedication stands out, as he fulfilled his monthly commitment to Olumo, setting him apart from others who often fall short of similar promises.
May the soul of Charles Olumo rest in perfect peace.
