The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has taken steps to review the recent case involving individuals charged in connection with the End Bad Governance protest.
According to a statement, the AGF disclosed that his office had been informed of the protesters’ arraignment on various charges, including allegations of treason, following the violent protests held earlier this week.
Expressing concern over the handling of the case, the AGF noted several issues that his office needs to examine to make an informed decision on how to proceed.
“There are some issues my office will need to look into regarding the matter to enable me to take an informed decision,” Fagbemi stated.
The defendants in question have been remanded by the court to detention centres, with the case adjourned until January 2025.
The AGF clarified that while it is beyond his authority to alter the court’s decision on the adjournment, he has nonetheless taken steps to expedite the judicial process.
“It is not within my power to vary the order of the court remanding the defendants in detention centres and adjourning the case to January,” he remarked.
Fagbemi has formally directed the Nigeria Police to transfer the complete case file to his office and submit it to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) by Saturday, November 2, 2024.
The AGF has also tasked the DPPF with making preparations to request an earlier court date to facilitate a more timely resolution.
The End Bad Governance protest, a demonstration initially aimed at raising awareness of governance issues, escalated into a series of violent clashes, leading to the arrests.
