The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the Sikorsky SK76 helicopter that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Bonny Finima, Rivers State, have been recovered.
This was confirmed by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) in a statement released on Friday through Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance.
The helicopter, operated by East Wind Aviation and chartered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, plummeted into the ocean on October 24, just after departing from Port Harcourt, Rivers State's capital.
The crash, which led to an extensive search effort, had spurred cooperation among multiple agencies to locate the wreckage and recover crucial data from the aircraft’s black boxes.
Two weeks after the tragic incident, the NSIB announced the successful retrieval of both the FDR and CVR.
These black boxes are expected to play a key role in determining the cause of the crash by providing critical data on the helicopter’s final moments.
Oladeji explained that the retrieval was a collaborative effort involving several agencies: NNPC, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Nigerian Navy, and HydroDive, an underwater engineering firm.
The NSIB is now expected to analyze the data from the recorders to piece together the events leading to the crash.
This data will be instrumental in understanding whether technical malfunction, human error, or environmental factors may have contributed to the incident.
