The Aké Arts and Books Festival has once again transformed Lagos into a beacon of creativity, drawing artists, writers, and culture enthusiasts from across Africa and beyond.
Celebrating its 12th edition, the festival kicked off with an inspiring opening ceremony led by its director, Lola Shoneyin.
Under this year’s theme, “Finding Freedom,” Shoneyin delivered a poignant address that delved into the challenges of the modern world and the resilience of art as a vehicle for hope and transformation.
“I’ve seen too many structures fail us — systems that were supposed to keep us curious and informed have crumbled, leaving people dehumanized and hopeless,” Shoneyin said.
“But here, at Aké Festival, we don’t shy away from those hard truths. We embrace them, knowing our stories hold the power to heal, to inspire, and yes, to set us free,” added Shoneyin.
Her remarks met with thunderous applause and set the tone for the festival, which has become a global platform for celebrating African storytelling, innovation, and heritage.
The multi-day event features an eclectic line-up of activities, including book chats, panel discussions, poetry readings, music performances, and film screenings.
Every element of the program is crafted to spark dialogue, reflection, and a deeper appreciation for Africa’s diverse narratives.
Sterling Bank, the festival’s headline sponsor for the past eight years, continues to play a pivotal role in its success.
Speaking at a press briefing, Maurice Igugu, Sterling Bank’s Chief Marketing Officer, underscored the bank’s commitment to nurturing creativity and preserving culture.
“Platforms like Aké are essential for fostering creativity and preserving culture.
“It’s more than just an event — it’s a celebration of who we are and what makes us unique.
“It showcases the richness of African heritage and amplifies our voices on a global stage,” Igugu stated.
Igugu highlighted Sterling Bank’s dedication to initiatives that promote intellectual and cultural growth.
“When we invest in initiatives like Aké, we’re not just funding a festival; we’re supporting a movement that nurtures creativity and encourages intellectual and cultural growth,” he added.
Shoneyin’s vision, combined with Sterling Bank’s unwavering support, has solidified Aké as one of Africa’s premier cultural events.
Together, they have created a space where creativity thrives, stories transcend borders, and the spirit of Africa shines brightly on the global stage.
As festival-goers immerse themselves in this year’s events, the enduring partnership between Shoneyin’s leadership and Sterling Bank’s backing serves as a reminder of the profound impact of collaboration in uplifting Africa’s artistic voice.
The Aké Arts and Books Festival runs through the weekend, promising a memorable celebration of literature, art, and the unyielding quest for freedom.
