Search and Recovery Efforts Continue for Helicopter Crash Off Port Harcourt Coast, Five Bodies Recovered

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced that search and recovery operations remain active following Thursday’s crash of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident, which occurred around 11:22 am, involved eight people on board, including six passengers and two crew members. As of now, five bodies have been recovered, with three individuals still unaccounted for.

In a Friday evening update, the NSIB noted that while no additional debris, survivors, or bodies were recovered during the day, divers were able to establish a secure perimeter at the anticipated wreck site, located at a depth of 40-50 meters. Search operations had been suspended at approximately 6:15 pm due to fading daylight.

Additional diving equipment and resources will be deployed to support the continuation of recovery efforts on Saturday. NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. commended the combined rescue teams for their dedication, emphasizing the bureau's commitment to a comprehensive investigation and timely updates for all stakeholders. Further information will be provided as the search progresses.
