Jonathan Reflects on Emotional Struggle of Losing 2015 Election, Shares Untold Story of Transition

Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has opened up about the deep emotional struggles he faced following his loss in the 2015 presidential election.

Speaking at the inaugural Raymond Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture, organized by Daar Communications and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Jonathan described the experience as one of the most challenging moments in his political life.

Jonathan recalled the overwhelming wave of emotion he felt upon hearing the election results, likening it to feeling as though the entire world were against him.

The 2015 election marked a historic moment in Nigeria, being the first instance in which an incumbent president lost a re-election bid.

Jonathan, running as the candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won with 15,424,921 votes to Jonathan's 12,853,162.

Reflecting on that period, Jonathan smiled as he spoke of the deep emotional struggles he faced.

Jonathan expressed gratitude to Raymond Dokpesi, Chairman of Daar Communications, for his support before he transitioned power to Buhari.

Jonathan described Dokpesi’s congratulatory message and words of encouragement as instrumental in helping him move past the defeat and embrace his new chapter as a private citizen.

“If you read my book, My Transition Hours, I explain it more elaborately,” he added, noting how the support from elder statesmen and Dokpesi’s words had a lasting impact on both his political and spiritual journey.
