Israel Launches Targeted Strikes on Iran Following October Attacks

Israel launched “precise strikes” on Iranian military targets on Saturday, citing a response to months of alleged missile attacks from Iran, according to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

These strikes reportedly follow Israel's earlier promise of a “deadly, precise, and surprising” response to Iranian aggression, after an October 1 missile attack attributed to Iran.

Explosions were heard in Tehran early Saturday, as reported by AFP journalists and Iranian state media.

Iran’s state television noted “strong explosions” but provided no details on the origin of the blasts.

A government news outlet stated that Syria’s air defences intercepted “hostile targets” near Damascus, though it was unclear if the events were connected.

The escalations follow a series of confrontations, including Israel’s ongoing conflict with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza after an October 7 attack on Israel, which left over 1,200 people dead.

Since then, Israel has broadened its military focus to Lebanon, where it seeks to counter-attacks by Hezbollah.

The U.S. National Security Council confirmed that Israel notified Washington in advance of the strikes, emphasizing that the attacks were a self-defence measure with no U.S. involvement.

In Tehran, however, the Iranian government warned that any attacks on its infrastructure, especially its nuclear or energy sites, would trigger “an even stronger response.”
