The Nigerian Army has denied circulating reports that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has passed away.
The rumours originated from a social media post by a Nigerian journalist, which quickly gained traction online.
The journalist's post claimed that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja had died of stage three cancer nearly 48 hours prior in an undisclosed hospital overseas.
The post further suggested that the information was being concealed due to intense lobbying among high-ranking officers vying for the position.
The post read: “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has died.
“Lagbaja died in an undisclosed hospital overseas nearly 48 hours ago from stage three cancer, according to a senior government official.
“The death of the Chief of Army Staff has been kept secret due to intense lobbying by some generals who wish to take the position.”
In response, the Nigerian Army dismissed the claims as fake news through a statement on X, the social media platform.
