Police Release #EndSARS Memorial Protesters in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has released the protesters who were detained during the fourth-anniversary commemoration of the #EndSARS protests.

Over 18 individuals were arrested at the Lekki Toll Gate and subsequently taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, was present at the SCID to oversee the release process.

Confirming the development, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, announced on his X handle, “All protesters in our custody have been released. CP Olanrewaju Ishola was on the ground at the SCID to personally see to that.”

The #EndSARS movement, which gained momentum between October 1 and 20, 2020, emerged as a nationwide outcry against police brutality.

The protests, which saw several casualties, have since become a significant moment in Nigeria’s recent history.

During the memorial on Sunday, some youths who gathered at the tollgate to mark the occasion were tear-gassed and arrested by police.

Among those detained were Hassan Soweto, the National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, according to the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, and Omole Ibukun, the Initiator of the Creative Change Centre.

“Soweto and 17 other members of the #EndBadGovernance Movement Lagos were arrested at the Lekki Toll Gate this morning by the police.

“They were there to mark the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS killings. Where they have been taken to is not yet known.

“We demand their immediate and unconditional release. Peaceful protest is a fundamental right,” read their message.

Other individuals detained included Remilekun Orunsolu, Olamide Thomas, Michael Adedeji, Adeseye Eshe, and Olamilekan Sanusi.
