An Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness, Felicia Paul, testified before a Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja, Lagos, alleging that Muritala Adebayo, also known as the Oloriebi of Ajaland, fraudulently acquired three vehicles and several million Naira from his son-in-law, Mr. Gafar Adamonleke.
Felicia Paul, an operative from the EFCC's Lagos office, presented evidence under the guidance of Babangida Isah.
She explained that a thorough investigation conducted by her team revealed that Adebayo had received the vehicles and substantial sums of money from Adamonleke in exchange for plots of land located in the Ogombo and Ibeju-Lekki areas of Lagos State.
Paul further detailed that Adebayo received some of the payments directly, both in cash and through bank transfers, while three of his staff members — Ahmed, Godwin, and Richard, collected additional funds on his behalf.
According to Paul, the investigation found that Adebayo received N4.5 million for the Ogombo land and a cumulative N14.5 million for the Ibeju-Lekki land.
The witness further stated that alongside these payments, Adebayo also allegedly took possession of a Honda Civic and two Toyota Camry cars, collectively valued at N9 million, as part of the transaction.
"I know the defendant in the box. My team investigated the case following a petition from Mr. Gafar Adamonleke, submitted through his legal representative," Paul stated in court.
She added that Adamonleke had sought to purchase land in Ogombo and Ibeju-Lekki in 2015, paying N4.5 million for the Ogombo land and N14.5 million for the Ibeju-Lekki land.
Paul explained that Adamonleke provided Adebayo with three cars as part of the transaction for the Ibeju-Lekki land.
"The complainant made payments both in cash and through bank transfers to the defendant’s account.
“Additionally, Adebayo’s staff members — Ahmed, Richard, and Godwin, received funds on his behalf."
The witness also shared that when Adamonleke came to adopt his petition, he provided supporting documents, including the Deeds of Assignment for the lands in Ogombo and Ibeju-Lekki, adding that during investigation, the EFCC recovered N4.5 million related to the Ogombo property and returned it to Adamonleke.
Paul highlighted evidence of the payments made, both through cash and bank transfers, all of which were acknowledged by Adebayo.
He said when Adamonleke visited the Ogombo land, he found other individuals already occupying it.
Under cross-examination by defense counsel Bamidele Ogundele, Paul maintained that during Adebayo's arrest, his staff members — Ahmed, Richard, and Godwin, were also detained and confirmed that they had received money from Adamonleke at different times on Adebayo’s behalf.
The presiding judge, Justice Mojisola Dada, adjourned the case until November 12, 2024, for the continuation of the trial.
