Lagos-based human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, along with his son, Folarin Falana (popularly known as Falz), have demanded a formal retraction and public apology within 12 hours from Idris Okunneye, also known as Bobrisky, for allegedly making defamatory statements against them.
In a letter dated October 14, 2024, titled "Demand for Withdrawal and Retraction of Defamatory Statement Against Mr. Femi Falana, SAN," issued by Olorunfemi Akinyemi and Taiwo Olawanle, counsels from the Falana and Falana Chambers, the legal team alleged that Bobrisky exploited his recent imprisonment to solicit money from artists and the public.
The solicitation, according to the letter, was aimed at securing a special cell for his confinement after his conviction by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, in May for abuse of the Naira.
“It is undoubtedly clear that you set out to enrich yourself at the expense of our client's reputation," the letter stated.
"In fact, you have since published a list of persons who believed your concocted story and donated millions of Naira, allegedly to pay our client's father to write a letter of pardon and bribe some unnamed public officers on your behalf,” the letter added.
The Falana law firm maintained that Bobrisky’s claims involving the Falanas in this matter were entirely fabricated, as Femi Falana was never engaged to write a pardon letter or bribe any officials on Bobrisky’s behalf.
The lawyers warned that if Bobrisky failed to issue a formal retraction and apology within 12 hours of receiving the letter, they would pursue appropriate legal action, including seeking monetary damages for the alleged defamatory statements.
