Helicopter Crash in Rivers: FG Confirms Three Dead, Search for Survivors Ongoing

 


The Federal Government (FG) has confirmed the crash of a helicopter in Rivers State. 

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at approximately 11:22 am, along the waterways near Port Harcourt.

According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, “A Sikorsky SK76 helicopter operated by East Wind Aviation, carrying eight people, was en route from Port Harcourt Military Base to the NUIMANTAN oil rig when it crashed into the waters near Bonny Finima in the Atlantic Ocean.

“Emergency response teams, including the Nigerian Search and Rescue Unit, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), and the military, were immediately activated. 

“Despite no Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal, search efforts are ongoing. Three bodies have been recovered so far.”

Keyamo assured the public that all available resources are being utilized to locate survivors and minimize casualties. 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those on board," the minister stated, adding that further updates will be provided as more information emerges,” the Minister added.
