The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nigeria, has called for equal rights for women to promote gender justice during a recent dialogue focused on engaging men as allies in the fight against gender-based violence.
The event, part of FIDA's week-long annual meeting, emphasized raising awareness about women's rights and encouraging men to champion these causes in their communities. Supported by the Ford Foundation, the forum aimed to foster collaboration among religious, traditional, and government leaders to combat deep-rooted cultural practices that perpetuate violence against women.
Vice National President Amina Agbaje highlighted the prevalence of early and forced marriages in Africa, underscoring the need for comprehensive community engagement to address economic barriers and inheritance discrimination faced by women.
Project Manager Fikih Obaro urged traditional leaders to facilitate discussions on gender equality and act as advocates for women's rights, emphasizing that both boys and girls should have equal rights in society.
The dialogue also addressed the limitations of traditional leaders' roles in cases of sexual abuse, advocating for mandatory reporting to appropriate authorities to ensure justice.
FIDA's Chairperson in Ikeja, Marian Jones, noted that this initiative is part of a three-year program currently underway in Lagos, Ekiti, and Plateau states, aimed at fostering ongoing community dialogue and awareness.
Traditional leaders, including Dr. Abidemi Aberejo, emphasized the importance of understanding legal boundaries when dealing with cases of violence and urged greater participation in future discussions.
