Former Keystone Bank official faces N35m theft charge

A four-count charge of alleged theft to the tune of N35m has been instituted against a former employee of Keystone Bank Limited, KBL, Mrs Ebele Bernardine Okpala.

The theft charge was initiated before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos by the legal section of the Police Special Fraud Unit, PSFU, in Lagos.

It would be recalled that Mrs Okpala was arrested by the PSFU over alleged offences bordering on fraudulent conversion and stealing of Thirty-Five Million Naira (N35,000,000.00).

According to the PSFU, the amount was the credit facility she obtained in July 2023 from a financial services firm as proof of funds to facilitate the approval of a Canadian Visa for her daughter.

While adding that the said sum was deposited in the suspect’s account domiciled in Keystone Bank Limited and was secured by a Post-No-Debit, PND, placed by the financial institution at the behest of the financial company to preserve the funds, the PSFU insisted that the suspect, alongside another of her colleague at the bank who was a Service Manager, allegedly circumvented procedures and processes put in place by KBL and lifted the PND without authorisation to enable Okpala to transfer the fund out to settle personal needs.
