Terrorism: Supreme Court orders IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu to defend self

The Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was, on Friday, ordered to go ahead and defend himself on the terrorism charge slammed against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN).

The order was issued by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which equally refused to order the release of the embattled IPOB leader from detention.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim but written by Justice Garba Lawal, the apex court voided and set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal which had earlier, in October 2022, ordered the release of Kanu and also quashed the terrorism charge against him.

The Supreme Court declared that although the FGN was reckless and unlawfully rendered Kanu from Kenya, adding that such an unlawful act has not divested any court from proceeding with trial.

While stating that no Nigerian law was cited in the suit seeking Kanu’s release on mere unlawful abduction from Kenya, Justice Lawal added that currently, the remedy for such action is for Kanu to file a civil suit against such act instead of removing the powers of courts to continue with his trial for alleged criminal charges.

Consequently, the Supreme Court ordered that Kanu should go and defend himself in the remaining 7 counts of terrorism made against him.
