Fuel Subsidy: Don't embark on strike, court orders organized labour

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliates were today stopped from embarking on strike over the removal of fuel subsidies.

Justice O.Y. Anuwe of the National Industrial Court, Abuja, gave the restraining order in a Motion Ex-parte brought by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) after entertaining arguments from its lawyers.

The judge specifically granted the prayers on the motion paper, stopping the strike from going ahead, and ordered the FGN to put the labour unions on notice.

Justice Anime ordered that the defendants/ respondents be immediately served with the originating processes in the suit, the Motion on Notice, and the order of this court.

The matter has been adjourned until June 19, 2023.

It would be recalled that unions had planned to commence the industrial action on Wednesday.

The plaintiffs in the suit are the FGN and the Attorney-General of the Federation & Minister of Justice, while the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress are the defendants.
