NDLEA Arrests 67-Year-Old Grandmother, PhD Student, Others in Major Drug Busts Across Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking, arresting multiple suspects in coordinated operations across Nigeria.  


A 67-year-old Nigerian-British grandmother, Mrs Mary Barek, was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Sunday, June 28, while attempting to board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London. 

NDLEA officials revealed that the agency discovered 13 kilograms of cocaine concealed in fake plantain peels inside her luggage. 

According to NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Barek admitted ownership of the illicit drugs.  

In another operation, NDLEA operatives arrested Nwabueze Felix Onyeka, a 45-year-old PhD student at the University of Putra, Malaysia

He was traced to his hometown in Anambra State after investigators intercepted 36 parcels of cocaine hidden in cartons of Orijin Bitters bound for Kuala Lumpur. Onyeka was identified as the alleged leader of a drug trafficking syndicate.  

Further arrests included: Daniel Harrison Ugwuoke (30) in Taraba State with 43,980 Tramadol capsules concealed in modified vehicle fuel tanks; Boniface Agu (65) and Monday Nwaeze (50) in Kaduna State with 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine; Francis Ifara Eja (65) in Ebonyi State with 231.7 kilograms of skunk; Alhaji Babani (75) in Plateau State with 15 kilograms of skunk; Dahiru Mohammed (65) and Isiya Lawan (36) in Gombe State with 587 blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 556 kilograms.  

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers for combining enforcement with the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign, which continues nationwide in schools, workplaces, and communities.
