Hearing in petitions against the February 25 presidential election began today before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Abuja.
As proceedings commenced before the PEPC, a five-member panel, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, made public the modalities of the proceedings.
Other members of the panel are Justices Stephen Adah, Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf, Boloukuromo Ugo and Abba Mohammed.
In welcoming parties, Justice Tsammani informed the court that there were five petitions currently before them which include that of the Action Alliance (AA), Action People’s Party (APP), Labour Party (LP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The presiding judge posited that for convenience, the court will take the first three petitions today (Monday), and adjourn to Wednesday, adding that the fourth and fifth petitions which involve APM and PDP would be taken Tuesday and then would be adjourned to Thursday.
Justice Tsammani who solicited for understanding and cooperation of the bar, and also gave the assurance that the bench would be fair to all, added that the bench is not unmindful of the importance of the cases before it.
The presiding judge specifically urged the bar to avoid unnecessary time-wasting through unnecessary objections, adding that as lawyers, they should avoid making inflammatory statements owing to the importance of the cases before the court.
