Dangote Refinery Hosts FUTO’s Top Engineering Students, Boosts Future of African Industrial Talent

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has opened its doors to top-performing students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), giving them firsthand exposure to Africa’s largest industrial complex.

The educational tour fulfils a pledge made by Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, during FUTO’s 37th Public Lecture to connect exceptional students with world-class industrial operations.

Led by FUTO Vice Chancellor, Professor Nnenna Oti, the delegation featured high-achieving students from mechanical, chemical, petroleum, software engineering, and entrepreneurship programs. The visit aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical industry experience.

During an interactive session, Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals Managing Director, David Bird, described the facility as proof that innovation, technology, and private investment can drive economic transformation and create opportunities for young Africans.

He noted the refinery is the world’s largest single-train refinery and one of the most energy-efficient, automated, and data-driven plants globally.

“There is no better showcase of modern technology than the refinery Alhaji Aliko Dangote has built here. It’s contributing to decarbonisation of the oil and gas value chain while delivering cleaner fuels to Nigeria and West Africa,” Bird said.

Bird added that the refinery plans to expand partnerships with universities and research institutions, focusing on renewable energy, biofuels, and sustainable fuel technologies.

“Our objective is to stay aligned with universities, understand their research, and support the commercialisation of innovative ideas,” he said.

Professor Oti called the tour “transformative and life-changing,” noting it was part of Dangote’s promise to invite 15 female and 15 male students after his FUTO lecture.

“This is what I describe as an Ivory Tower–Industry Partnership. Exposing students to facilities of this scale bridges theory and practice,” she said.

Students said the visit brought classroom concepts to life. Amadi Ijeoma Winfrey, a 500-level Mechanical Engineering student, said seeing pumps, compressors, and turbines in operation “helped bridge the gap between theory and reality.”

Israel Ifanyichukwu, a 500-level Chemical Engineering student, called it transformative, saying it broadened his perspective on industrial-scale applications.

FUTO’s Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Professor Abraham Ngwuta, and Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Chikwendu Emenike Orji, said Dangote’s investments demonstrate how vision and discipline drive national development and job creation.

The initiative is part of Dangote Industries’ commitment to advancing education, innovation, and skills development to prepare a new generation of professionals for Africa’s industrial transformation.
