ASUU Strike: FG Out Of Ideas, Says Labour Party

  • As Party Knocks Nigerian Government For Recognising Factional Academic Union

The decision of the Federal Government (FG), to recognise another faction in the academic environment, with the Certificate of Incorporation issued to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), was on Wednesday condemned by the Labour Party (LP).

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Comrade Arabambi Abayomi Oluwafemi, the move spearheaded by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, is an ill wind that will bring no good to the academic community.

He advised the FG to explore ways of returning students to school rather than creating more crises.

According to him, “it is sad to note that those who benefited from scholarship at the expense of Nigeria are now the ones making education elusive to the masses, forgetting that the Monster they are creating today will consume them tomorrow.

“While sympathising with the students and their parents, the Labour Party is appealing to both the ASUU and the Federal Government to close ranks and work out an agreeable solution to the lingering crisis.”

On the proposed budget for 2023, Comrade Oluwafemi faulted the proposed N19.76 trillion expenditure of which the Federal Government is proposing to borrow N11tr, saying it is a bad decision.

According to him, the debt burden in Nigeria at present is huge going by the disclosure from the FG which claims that debt services are more than the country’s revenue.

To this end, the LP wonders how the FG intends to manage the new proposal without affecting the already battered economy, which has pauperised Nigerians and has ruined the economy both for the starters and the big players.

While charging the FG to look inward, and put up its thinking caps to save the nation pending the time it would be kicked out of office through ballots next year to pave way for Peter Obi/Datti presidential mandate, the Party insisted that its candidate, Peter Obi, has what it takes to rule the country with a more result-oriented and humane approach.

Comrade Oluwafemi expressed the confidence that with the growing acceptance of Obi, the journey to the villa is a done deal as the Party currently with over a 40million membership strength is drawn across the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), affiliated trade unions, professional bodies, students, and other old members.

The Party also wants incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) to prepare compressive handover notes for the smooth running of Nigeria come May 29, 2023, with Peter Obi as President.
