Adebayo Vows to Challenge Tinubu in 2027, Says ‘Hunger Trumps Regional Politics’

The Social Democratic Party presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, says he will not back down from a 2027 contest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that widespread hunger and poverty outweigh ethnic or regional considerations.

Speaking shortly after clinching the SDP’s presidential ticket, Adebayo dismissed concerns that both he and Tinubu hail from the South-West.

“A hungry person in the South-West is still hungry. Someone buying petrol at outrageous prices won’t care about regional identity,” he said.

Adebayo stated that the SDP’s 2027 campaign will focus on addressing economic hardship through policies that prioritise education, healthcare, job creation, and social welfare.

He positioned the SDP as a party for “ordinary Nigerians,” contrasting it with the ruling All Progressives Congress, which he accused of prioritising electoral wins over governance.

“A social democrat won’t wake up and remove subsidies without thinking about the impact on transport, food, housing, jobs and people’s savings. But if you are APC, your focus is on winning elections and congratulating yourselves afterwards,” Adebayo stated.

Addressing the internal crisis involving the party’s former national chairman, Adebayo declined to make detailed comments, citing legal ethics.

“Once you start with something being in court, especially someone who is at the risk of losing his liberty and facing a criminal trial, it is unethical for me to comment on it,” he said.

He added that discipline within the party must follow due process.

He also condemned the destruction of the SDP secretariat during the crisis, alleging police complicity.

“It’s the police that brought them, and the police used them to pull down the gates because they didn’t want to do it themselves,” he claimed.

Adebayo further accused the APC of working to destabilise opposition parties. “Yes, we are dealing with that. President Tinubu desires to be the only person in the race,” he said.

The SDP candidate criticised recent federal education policies, calling them deformations rather than reforms.

“The lowest-quality people are in government, and they want standards to fall because an educated population asks questions and challenges bad governance,” he said.

He rejected the Federal Government’s student loan scheme as “a crime against the constitution and against the people,” arguing that education should be free, compulsory, and qualitative.

“Why should students borrow money for education if education is supposed to be free, compulsory, and qualitative?” he asked.

Adebayo warned that neglecting education would fuel unemployment and insecurity.

“You will turn scientists into taxi drivers. You destroy civilisation, and insecurity grows because the people who should become innovators are abandoned,” he said.

The SDP flag bearer insisted that addressing daily survival issues — food, transport costs, healthcare, and jobs, will remain the core of his campaign ahead of 2027.
