2027 Elections: SDP’s Adebayo Demands Tinubu Explain Rising Hunger, Debt, Power Crisis

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, says the 2027 general elections will serve as a public verdict on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s economy, security, and cost of living.

Speaking in a televised interview on national issues, Adebayo criticised what he called unprecedented hardship under the current administration, citing inflation, unemployment, and failed economic policies.

He said the Tinubu government must defend its record at the polls rather than depend on political alliances.

“You cannot defeat President Tinubu by merely rousing anger. You have to raise issues because he is in charge of government today and, on objective analysis, he is not delivering,” Adebayo stated.

He pointed to the strain of fuel costs on households, noting that, “A Nigerian who owns a Toyota Corolla did not bargain for spending N60,000 to fill the tank when his salary is less than N200,000.”

Adebayo also faulted the administration’s record on power supply, arguing that campaign promises from 2023 remain unmet.

“President Tinubu himself cannot give himself electricity. He has to go off-grid in the State House because the national grid failed him,” he said.

According to the SDP candidate, Tinubu owes Nigerians answers on debt accumulation, economic management, and key appointments made since 2023.

“He has to account for how much debt he has accumulated on behalf of present and unborn generations.

“Presidency is a job, and every person with a job must render account to those who employed him,” he added.

On anti-corruption, Adebayo warned against political interference in prosecutions.

He said law enforcement and the judiciary should operate without party influence, and rejected claims that defection to the ruling party could shield politicians from trial.

“We don’t want a situation where people facing trial are told that if they switch to the ruling party, they can obtain forgiveness or amnesty,” he said.

Addressing speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s possible 2027 run, Adebayo affirmed Jonathan’s constitutional right to contest but urged clarity.

“If he wants to run, he should come out openly and address Nigerians. The presidency of Nigeria is not an office people are dragged into by speculation,” he noted.

Adebayo expressed confidence that the SDP will unseat the ruling party in 2027 by offering what he called a clear alternative that puts the welfare of the people first.”
