As Nigeria battles rising food prices and food security concerns, Dangote Cement Plc, Ibese Plant, has commissioned a multi-million naira garri and fufu processing plant in Kajola, Ewekoro LGA, Ogun State.
The state-of-the-art facility was handed over to the Kajola Host Community as part of the company’s 2022 Community Development Agreement.
It aims to boost agricultural value addition, cut post-harvest losses, and create sustainable livelihoods for cassava farmers and women processors.
Speaking at the commissioning, Ibese Plant Director, Mr Ayyagari Subbaraidu, said the project will improve cassava processing efficiency and expand income opportunities.
“This project is aimed at improving cassava processing, reducing losses and creating sustainable employment for women and farmers in the community,” he stated.
Key features of the facility include separate garri and fufu processing units
5-tonne-per-day peeling machine, hydraulic presses, and frying systems
Fermentation basins, solar-powered boreholes, and sanitation infrastructure
The plant is expected to serve as an economic catalyst for Kajola and surrounding communities by boosting productivity and supporting small-scale agribusinesses. Subbaraidu urged transparent management to ensure long-term sustainability.
Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Bolu Owotomo, commissioned the plant and praised Dangote Cement’s commitment to rural empowerment.
He noted the project aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s vision of agriculture-driven economic growth through value addition.
Owotomo revealed that over 166,000 farmers, including 90,000+ cassava farmers, are registered under the Ogun State Farmers Information Management System to benefit from state interventions.
He cited OGSTEP, VCDP, and FADAMA-OG CARES as ongoing programs supporting cassava farmers with training and mechanization.
“This processing plant will strengthen the cassava value chain, improve product quality, create jobs and enhance food security while boosting farmers’ incomes,” Owotomo said.
Ewekoro LGA Vice Chairman, Abisola Aliyu, representing Council Chairman, Sikiru Adesina Adisa, called it a transformative project that will ease traditional processing burdens and stimulate local enterprise.
Oba Kayode Kusoro, the Olu of Aga Olowo, commended Dangote Cement for fulfilling its CSR obligations and urged residents to protect the facility from vandalism. He expressed confidence the plant would become a major hub for cassava processing and wealth creation.
Mrs Abosede Onifade, speaking for women processors, said the mill will enable large-scale output with less stress. She said, “With this mill, we can now produce in larger quantities with less stress. We are grateful to Dangote Cement for improving our livelihoods,” she said.
