Warri, Nigeria – A prominent youth advocacy group, the Itsekiri Youths for Good Governance (IYGG), has delivered a sharp warning to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to resist pressures to decentralise pipeline surveillance contracts in the Niger Delta.
The group asserts that such a move would not only destabilise the region but also empower criminal elements involved in illegal bunkering and crude oil theft.
In a comprehensive public statement released on Monday, the IYGG unequivocally described the campaign for a regional redistribution of these crucial contracts as a "dangerous and self-serving agenda."
They contend that this push is not genuinely motivated by equity but rather by vested interests seeking illicit access to the nation's vital oil infrastructure.
The IYGG’s statement drew a stark parallel to the volatile era of Niger Delta militancy, rampant pipeline vandalism, and severe economic disruption that once plagued the region. They emphasized that the current, albeit fragile, peace enjoyed in the area was painstakingly achieved and must not be jeopardised for political gain or patronage.
"Decentralisation, as currently being proposed, is nothing but a coded attempt to legitimise disorder and create multiple centres of unregulated control," the IYGG declared.
The group stressed that pipeline surveillance is fundamentally a national security concern that demands proven competence and robust capacity, not a system for political rewards.
They highlighted the consistent performance of existing surveillance companies in effectively curbing oil theft, safeguarding national assets, and maintaining stability in historically volatile zones.
Instead of fragmenting the current successful arrangements, the Itsekiri youths called on President Tinubu to fortify the existing framework.
They recommended expanding the operational reach and enhancing the logistical support for surveillance contractors who have already demonstrated their efficacy.
Furthermore, the IYGG appealed to traditional rulers, other youth organisations, and political stakeholders across the Niger Delta to reject divisive narratives designed to inflame community tensions for selfish motives.
They underscored that the region's progress and prosperity hinge on unity and a collective commitment to lawful economic activities.
"We must not allow a few desperate actors to drag the entire Niger Delta back into an era of violence, destruction, and economic sabotage," the statement cautioned.
The significant statement was jointly signed by Mone Oris, Chairman, and Metsaghanrun S. Oki, Secretary, of the Itsekiri Youths for Good Governance, signalling a united front against any policy changes perceived to threaten the Niger Delta's stability.
