Makinde’s Advisory Council Screens Oyo Governorship Aspirants, Submits Report

IBADAN, Nigeria — A major step toward the next governorship election in Oyo State has been taken following the completion of a screening and stakeholder engagement exercise initiated by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The exercise, coordinated by the Oyo State Governor’s Advisory Council and led by its chairman, Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, involved consultations with aspirants seeking to succeed the current administration.

In a statement released after the exercise, Ayorinde disclosed that the council has concluded its engagements and submitted a comprehensive report to the governor, describing the process as both revealing and reassuring.

According to him, the initiative was designed to ensure a level playing field while assessing the competence, readiness, and vision of potential candidates ahead of the election.

“It is revealing and reassuring that some of the aspirants are of excellent quality and indeed show that the future is very bright for our dear state,” the statement read.

The council noted that several aspirants demonstrated strong leadership capacity and a solid understanding of governance, a development it said reflects positively on the political future of Oyo State.

It also observed that many of the aspirants are loyal to the current administration, suggesting that continuity of policies and programmes could become a dominant theme in the transition process.

The committee stressed that Oyo State “cannot afford to be pulled back from the standards already set,” a remark widely interpreted by political observers as a subtle endorsement of candidates aligned with Governor Makinde’s development agenda.

The advisory council comprises notable political figures, including former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu; former Attorney-General, Michael Lana; and former federal lawmaker, Babs Oduyoye.

Other members are former senator Gbenga Babalola; Alhaji Ajibade; Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke; Dr Remi Ayodele; Pastor Alamu; Alhaji Gbadegesin, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to late ex-governor Adebayo Alao-Akala; and Chief Wale Atanda, who served as Chief of Staff to former governor Rasheed Ladoja.

The aspirants engaged during the process include Hon. Saheed Akinade Fijabi; Are Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, SAN; Professor Dahud Sanya Sangodoyin; Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo; Mr Adejumibi Samuel Ademola; and Ambassador Abdulsabul Abiola Olawoore.
