Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced internet fraudster Timi-pere Pere to 12 months imprisonment for impersonating a U.S. citizen and defrauding victims of $400.
Pere was convicted on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a two-count charge of impersonation and money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The case, first adjourned for review of facts and sentencing, resumed with prosecution counsel, Sulaiman I. Sulaiman and defence counsel, Victor Opara (SAN) representing the convict.
In his address before the court, an operative of the EFCC, Nura Adam told the judge that Pere was arrested following credible intelligence.
Adam tendered several exhibits, including a Blue iPhone 17 Pro Max, an iPhone 13 Pro Max, White Lenovo laptop, and a Zenith Bank cheque of N300,000 recovered from the convict.
Following the review of facts, Sulaiman urged the court to convict and sentence Pere.
In his allocutus, Opara (SAN) pleaded for mercy and requested a non-custodial sentence.
Delivering judgment, Justice Aneke sentenced Pere to 12 months imprisonment, backdated to March 25, 2026, the date of his arrest.
The judge also imposed a N300,000 fine as an option and ordered the convict to complete 100 hours of community service.
In addition, the court ordered the forfeiture of all recovered items — the Blue iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro Max, White Lenovo laptop, and Zenith Bank cheque of N300,000, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
According to the charge, Pere “sometime in 2026 in Lagos fraudulently impersonated Rose Cassandra, a citizen of the United States of America, with the intent to gain advantage,” contrary to Section 22(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act, 2015.
The second count stated that he “engaged in the disguise of the true source of the sum of $400, which you knew to be proceeds of criminal conduct,” an offence under Section 18(1)(d) of the EFCC Act, 2004.
